Solar systems powering energy savings

12 July 2017 - Fairfax. A FAMILY in south-western Sydney has become the first in the state to install a new solar home energy solution – the 5kW Bradford Solar ChargePack including Tesla Powerwall 2.

Michael D'Angelo said he and his wife had moved to solar in 2010 due to the generous rebate of 60c per kilowatt and the opportunity to lower their electricity costs.

We were tired of paying large electricity bills and now could do something about it. Mr D'Angela said that apart from the upfront cost, there were many benefits of solar, including regular refunds in their electricity bill. After seven years we have not had a problem with the system yet. We recovered the initial investment in five years and then reaped the rewards from that point on. When the rebate finished last year, they wanted to find a new solution.

We researched solar batteries and there was only one market option that kept coming up: the new Tesla Powerwall 2, part of the 5kW Bradford Solar ChargePack.

We decided on the Tesla Powerwall home battery due to the quality of the product, the warranty that covers the product and lastly the excellent customer service from Bradford Solar, he said. If the sun continues to shine and all going well, we should recover the initial cost of this investment in six to seven years. We have two systems together producing solar to the household and battery.

As the system has only been in for about a month, it is too early for the D'Angelos to realise the full benefits of the system though some advantages are already clear.

There is the immediate benefit of being able to actively monitor our usage through the Tesla app, and to have the flexibility of when we use solar, either day or night, he said. With double the energy storage of the original Tesla Powerwall, the new system is capable of storing 13.5kWh of solar energy, which is enough power to cover an average home's night time energy usage “helping a family of four save up to $2,300 on their annual energy bill.

Mr D'Angelo said that going solar is an investment. Do your research, speak to the quality and long serving companies such as Bradford Solar, buy quality to get quality, in the long run you will benefit from that. As consumers of energy and with electricity costs rising, the technology now exists to do something about these expensive costs.

It's in your hands now, he said. Bradford is part of CSR's building products business which has been in operation in Australia and New Zealand for over 160 years. For more information call CSR Bradford on 1800 332 332 or visit
